The R&B singer's ex-girlfriend, Rihanna , has been making the media rounds, speaking out about the February night when Brown beat her (he pleaded guilty to felony assault, got five years' probation, six months' community service, plus domestic-violence counseling sessions). Last we heard from Brown was in September, and he was starting his community service in Virginia, his home state. Two months later, he's making progress.

The Charleston chapter of the NAACP celebrated "bold dreams, big victories" Friday at its 93rd annual fundraising banquet. The event, which featured keynote speaker Julian Bond, chairman of the board of the century-old civil rights organization since 1998, drew a few hundred supporters to the Charleston Area Convention Center. Tickets cost $100 per person.

A taxi-cab company executive touched a nerve this week when he accused Phoenix staffers of overseeing a corrupt and fraudulent bid process for taxi contracts at Sky Harbor International Airport. Speaking before the City Council, H. David Faraji , vice president and partner of C-TO Transportation & Dispatching LLC, suggested that airport staffers had not been transparent and fudged the numbers in favor of the three winning bidders. Faraji, whose company was one of several losing bidders, told council members that it was incumbent upon them to prove the bid process was fair and open.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (USDA) reported today that 49 million Americans, including nearly 17 million children, are food insecure . The 2009 report on Household Food Insecurity in the United States paints an alarming picture of the pervasiveness of hunger in our nation. This is an increase of 36 percent over the numbers released one year [ago] by the USDA, which found that 36.2 million American were at risk of hunger.

Previous announcements notwithstanding, President Barack Obama won't be presenting the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award to Poudre Valley Health System after all.
